Mark-In / Mark-Out Editing

Precision cutting using Source Monitor markers — the Mark-In / Mark-Out workflow, and inserting clips onto the timeline instead of dragging them.

Create a 30-Second Clip Reel Using Mark-In / Mark-Out Technique

Your task: Create a 30-second video using exactly 3 different video clips. Each clip must not exceed 10 seconds. You must use the Mark-In / Mark-Out technique for every clip. Dragging clips directly onto the timeline is not allowed.

Step 1 — Open your project

Open Adobe Premiere Pro 2026 and load your Session 2 project file. Make sure your 3 clips are inside the Footage bin in the Project Panel.

Step 2 — Load Clip 1 into the Source Monitor

Double-click your first clip in the Footage bin. It will open in the Source Monitor.

Step 3 — Set Mark In

Play or scrub through the clip to find where you want it to start. Press I on your keyboard to set the Mark In point.

Step 4 — Set Mark Out

Continue playing the clip to where you want it to end. Press O to set the Mark Out point. Make sure the selected range is not longer than 10 seconds — check the duration shown in the Source Monitor timecode display.

Step 5 — Send the clip to the timeline

Make sure the playhead in the timeline is at the beginning (press Home). Press the comma key (,) to Insert the clip onto the timeline.

Step 6 — Repeat for Clip 2 and Clip 3

  1. Double-click your second clip in the Footage bin
  2. Set Mark In (I) and Mark Out (O) as you did in Steps 3 and 4
  3. Move the timeline playhead to the end of Clip 1
  4. Press the comma key (,) to insert Clip 2
  5. Repeat the same process for Clip 3

Step 7 — Check your total duration

Click on the timeline and look at the total duration shown at the top. It must be as close to 30 seconds as possible — aim for between 28 and 32 seconds.

Step 8 — Save and export

  1. Save your project: Ctrl+S (Windows) / Cmd+S (Mac)
  2. Export your video: File > Export > Media > Format: H.264 > Preset: Match Source — High Bitrate > Export

File naming

Save your project as: YourName_Session2_Reel
Save your exported H.264 as: YourName_Session2_Export

Example: Somchai_Session2_Reel and Somchai_Session2_Export

Submit both your project file and your exported H.264 to the classroom.
