Animated Lower-Third for a Mock News Segment

What you will do: Import a video clip, edit it using Mark-In/Mark-Out, and design an animated lower-third where your name slides in from the left and your job title slides in from the right. At the end, both slide back out the same way they came in.

Part 1 — Import & edit (Sessions 1 & 2 recap)

Step 1 — New project

  1. Create a new project named: YourName_Session4
  2. Make a bin called Footage and import at least 1 video clip into it

Step 2 — Edit your clip

  1. Double-click the clip to open it in the Source Monitor
  2. Press I for Mark In and O for Mark Out — select about 10 seconds
  3. Press comma (,) to insert it onto V1 of the timeline

Part 2 — Build the lower-third

Step 3 — Background bar

  1. Press T, click the lower-left area of the Program Monitor
  2. Draw a rectangle behind the text area
  3. Dark fill colour, opacity 85%

Step 4 — Name text

Type your full name — Bold, 44pt, White.

Step 5 — Job title text

Type a job title below your name — Regular, 28pt, Light grey. Example: News Reporter / Sports Anchor / Weather Presenter.

Step 6 — Accent line

Draw a thin rectangle (4px tall) above your name. Fill with yellow, red, or cyan.

Part 3 — Animate with keyframes

Open Effect Controls. Select the graphic clip on the timeline first.

Step 7 — Name enters from the left

  1. Playhead at frame 0 → Position X: -500 → click the stopwatch to set a keyframe
  2. Playhead at frame 20 → Position X: on-screen → keyframe set automatically
  3. Playhead at frame 20 → Rotation: -15° → set keyframe
  4. Playhead at frame 35 → Rotation: 0° → keyframe set automatically

Step 8 — Title enters from the right

  1. Playhead at frame 5 → Position X: 2500 → set keyframe
  2. Playhead at frame 25 → Position X: on-screen → keyframe set automatically
  3. Playhead at frame 25 → Rotation: 15° → set keyframe
  4. Playhead at frame 40 → Rotation: 0° → keyframe set automatically

Step 9 — Exit using copy & paste

For the name: select the frame 0 Position keyframe (-500) → right-click → Copy. Go to the last frame → right-click → Paste. Select the frame 20 Position keyframe (on-screen) → Copy. Go to 20 frames before the last frame → Paste. Repeat the same steps for the title using its own keyframes (off-screen right at the last frame, on-screen 20 frames before the last). Do the same for the Rotation keyframes on both texts.

Part 4 — Export

  1. Go to File > Export > Media
  2. Format: H.264
  3. Preset: Match Source — High Bitrate
  4. Click Export

File names

Export: YourName_Session4_Export

Submit both files to the class folder before Session 5.
